intro |
The following text may make multiple use of each data field. The field may contain magenta text presenting data from a type study and/or revision of other original material cited in the protolog of the present taxon. Macroscopic descriptions in magenta are a combination of data from the protolog and additional observations made on the exiccata during revision of the cited original material. The same field may also contain black text, which is data from a revision of the present taxon (including non-type material and/or material not cited in the protolog). Paragraphs of black text will be labeled if further subdivision of this text is appropriate. Olive text indicates a specimen that has not been thoroughly examined (for example, for microscopic details) and marks other places in the text where data is missing or uncertain. The following material is derived from the protolog. This species has an epigeous, secotioid habit and was originally described in the genus Torrendia.
basidiospores | from protolog: [-/-/-] (9.2-) 10.0 - 13.5 (-15.0) × (5.0-) 6.5 - 9.2 μm, (Q = 1.29 - 1.76; Q' = 1.51), hyaline, smooth, thin-walled, acyanophilic, inamyloid, broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid to elongate; apiculus broad; contents as occasional yellow "lipid body" (in 3% KOH); color in mass not recorded. [Note: These measurements do not conform to methodology of this site because (per protolog) the measurements included the apiculus.]
ecology | from protolog: Solitary to gregarious. In sandy to silty soil associated with Allocasuarina, Eucalyptus, and/or Leptospermum.

discussion |
Two collections of the present species that were yellowing on surface fibrils and sometimes showed yellow staining in the context when sectioned were the basis of Torrendia arenaria f. lutescens O. K. Mill. & Horak (1992). Other than the yellowing, this material differed from the type form only in the size and shape of the spores: 9.0 - 13.4 × (6.7-) 7.6 - 9.5 (-10.2) μm, (Q = 1.10 - 1.60; Q' = 1.29). Tulloss (2005b: 213) suggested that the yellowing specimens of the present species might not be properly treated as a separate form, but might be exhibiting the yellowing syndrome first discussed by Tulloss with regard to A. subsolitaria. The range of Q provided for f. lutescens in its protolog is rather broad and the mean is depressed toward the lower end of the range (see above), which suggests that the forms of spores may have been stunted or deformed as is often the case with amanitas exhibiting the yellowing syndrome. Justo (2010) treated f. lutescens as a synonym of the type form on genetic grounds.

Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
