intro |
Olive text indicates a specimen that
has not been thoroughly examined (for example, for
microscopic details) and marks other places in the text
where data is missing or uncertain. The following material is derived from photographs and notes of the collector, molecular research of Dr. L. V. Kudzma and other original research of R. E. Tulloss.
pileus | ?? mm wide, campanluate at first, dark gray-brown, with small pallid spots at least at first; context white; margin striate (ca. 0.35R at first); universal veil at first apparently leaving thin translucent filmy layer over central region.
peridium | double click in markup mode to edit.
lamellae | double click in markup mode to edit.
stipe | ?? × ?? mm, white, narrowing upward, longitudinally striatulate; context white; exannulate; universal veil as saccate volva, white, with scattered reddish brown stains on exterior, with short white submembranous-floccose limbus internus enclosing base of stipe.
odor/taste | neither recorded.
macrochemical tests |
none recorded. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
partial veil | absent. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
lamella edge tissue | sterile.

discussion |
There is a possibility that the present temporary
code name is synonymous with the provisionally name,
Amanita
subnigra Lamoureaux. We have examined existing molecular data. These data associate the name "A. subnigra with at least four distinct nrLSU sequences. These sequences are clearly associated with four probable species as represented by clades in a nrLSU-based phylogeny. These four species have distinct spores with with four distinctive sporographs—as illustrated below. Further molecular reaseach is required. It is possible that simply measuring spores may give strong evidence as to the likelihood of the specis to associate with the epithet subnigra.

Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
