The absence of volva on the stem cannot be taken to be equivalent to absence of a gluten layer. The stipe of species outside of sect. Lubricae is considered to be "dry." It is possible that this species is taxonomically synonymous with L. roseicremea. This species is known only from its type collection, which was gathered in San Mateo County, California, in a stand of redwoods.—R. E. Tulloss |

H. V. Smith (1945) proposed the current name to be a
taxonomic synonym of
L. solidipes
(Peck) H. V. Sm. The data she didn't have
from
L. macmurphyi was the form of the lamella
trama,
which RET found to be bilateral. Hence, the
data
from the present page improves somewhat the support
for
Smith's proposal. Since all the material
presently available to RET is quite old and in poor
condition, and since the holotypes of the two
mentioned
taxa were collected near opposite coasts of North
America, it seems best to await new, well-annotated
and
well-preserved collections. Nevertheless, it seems reasonable to provisionally assign L. macmurphyi to Limacella sect. Amanitellae to maintain its supposed association with L. solidipes. Moreover, the present taxon seems very simiar to L. roseicremea Murrill and to L. sp-Burnett-5-xi-1994, both assignable to sect. Amanitellae. Even if L. solidipes turns out to be distinct from L. mcmurphyi, the latter could well be synonymous with L. roseicremea.
