New taxon pages: Amanita sp-AUS06 is a possible new species from Australia assignable to sect. Vaginatae. Amanita madgascariensis was recently described by Tang et al. It is an example of the little known annulate species of sect. Vaginatae, to which Tang et al. call attention for the first time. A. sp-Arora_01-555 is new from Zambia; among Amanita taxa with sequenced nrLSU, its nrLSU sequence is most similar to that of A. madagascariensis.

Removed page: Amanita strobilaceovolvata Pegler & Shah-Sm. has been deleted. The Pegler and Shah-Smith concept was demonstrated to be based on a combination of multiple distinct species by Tang et al. in a recent paper.

Change of sectional placement: Due to recent studies (e.g., Tang et al.), several species are moved from section Caesareae to section Vaginatae: Amanita strobilaceovolvata and A. strobilaceovolvata sensu Pegler & Shah-Sm.

Change of taxon name: Dr. Scott Redhead has called our attention to a publication dated in 1771 that contains the earliest known proposal of the name Agaricus bulbosus. The taxon involved may be a wood decaying fungus according to Dr. Redhead's intepretation of the brief original description. Whatever the species, the existence of the name prior to Schaeffer's publication of Agaricus bulbosus invalidates Schaeffer's name. Hence, the latter name cannot be used as we have done on this site. The earliest name for the taxon in question (formerly commonly called A. citrina) is now Amanita mappa. The latter name will replace A. bulbosa in these pages. Since we will combine two pages into one in the process of the name change, the change will take some time to accomplish.

Because of an annoying problem with Greek alphabet fonts that we have not been able to resolve, we have abandoned using "ef1-α" in favor of the synonymous genetic locus name "tef1." New taxon page: Amanita kryorhodon (the "Frost Rose Ringless Amanita") is a new species of section __Vaginatae__ from eastern Canada and from Maine in the northeastern U.S. In the field it has been mistaken for both A. homolae and A. rasitabula. The species was briefly called Amanita sp-N62 on this site.
