Yellow reaction to 10% KOH on caps of dried specimens of white
destroying angels: After many requests of over many years concerning
whether one can expect a yellow reaction in dried material of "white
destroying angels," I carried out a few experiments to check this
issue. I selected material of
A. suballiacea and
A.
amerivirosa that had yielded a positive yellow reaction when tested
in the fresh condition. I used only pieces of caps that had dried to
a whitish or whitish tan color. For both species, I placed at least
one drop of KOH on the extracted cap fragment and then at a large window
(natural day light) I compared the surface of the cap fragment to the
surface of the untreated original cap. In both species the fragment
exposed to KOH was distinctly more yellow than the untreated dried
cap.

Name changes: The provisional name
Amanita petersenii
replaces the temporary code
A. sp-S06. The provisional name
A. albemarlensis replaced the temporary code
A. sp-V04
A preliminary attempt to give some structure
to the so-called "
penetratrix group" has resulted in the creation
of a provisional
Amanita [sect.
Vaginatae] series
Penetratrices. The reader will find that some of the species
within the series have been grouped in stirpes (singular is
"stirps"—Latin for "group"). At the moment, these stirpes collect
(1) a group with weak, graying volva, (2) a group with persistent partial
veil, (3) a group of taxa with a warted universal veil and no partial veil, and (4)
a group containing only
A. cinderellae. All this is
temporary and
crudely drawn.
It was very satisfying to find that it might eventually
be possible to see groups in the proposed
Penetratrices that
suggest evolution from a common ancestor with the
Caesareae.
The
Penetratrices (as proposed) appear to include about
10% of the presently known
Vaginatae.
